Woodlea Roof Replacement Map

Attached is a graphic that shows all the roof replacements or approvals that I know of as of 13-Jun-2011 that have been performed since the September storm.  I created this to use as justification to have my roof re-evaluated by Nationwide Insurance.  Data was collected by talking to neighbors and while walking our dog.  Green represents full replacements (135); yellow represents partial or repaired (5).

I think this may be of use to others in their fight, so I ask that you make it available on the website.

I am more than willing to make updates to it if my fellow neighbors would like to email their info.  I can be reached at hasslerk@verizon.net.  I of course can also send an updated copy to anyone that asks.

Cheers,

Kurt Hassler

Winter Weather Reminders from the Town of Leesburg

Town of Leesburg News Release

For Immediate Release

Leesburg Snow Emergency Routes & Snow Removal Policies

Leesburg, VA (December 10, 2010) – In preparation for the winter weather season, Town officials remind residents and businesses about Town policies for handling snow, sleet, ice and other wintry precipitation.

Snow Emergency Routes.  A snow emergency is declared when two or more inches of snow, sleet or other icy precipitation has accumulated on Town roadways.  When a snow emergency is in effect, all vehicles must be removed from the designated streets.  Any vehicle not removed from the designated streets when a snow emergency is in effect will be towed at the owner’s expense.  Snow emergency routes are:

  • Market Street, from Fairview Street to the Route 7/15 Bypass
  • King Street, from the Union Cemetery to Country Club Drive
  • Loudoun Street, from Liberty Street to Harrison Street

Snow removal from Town streets.  The Town of Leesburg Public Works Department’s Streets Division is responsible for snow removal from public streets throughout Town.  When possible, crews will salt and sand streets before the onset of wintry weather.  Plowing operations will begin immediately once snow starts to accumulate on roadways.  Snow emergency routes and other primary roads will be cleared first, followed by secondary streets and subdivision roads.  Town crews will work 12-hour shifts, 24 hours a day, as long as necessary to clear streets.  Until plowing is completed, citizens are urged not to use streets unless absolutely necessary.  In advance of a snowfall, residents can assist in the efficiency of snow removal operations by removing all vehicles, trailers, trash cans and other items from roadways in order to provide snow plows with maximum space for snow removal operations.

Snow removal from sidewalks.  Property owners or occupants are required to remove snow from public sidewalks adjoining their property within 24 hours of a snowfall.  If ice is present and cannot be removed, it should be covered with sand, kitty litter or similar substance that will allow pedestrians safe passage.  Snow from sidewalks, driveways and parking areas must not be pushed into the street or other Town right-of-way.  Town Streets Division crews will remove snow from sidewalks adjoining Town-owned or maintained properties.

For more information about the Town’s snow removal operations, please visit www.leesburgva.gov/index.aspx?page=152#snow_removal.

The Practice of Topping Trees

The practice of topping trees, or any pruning cut that lops
the end off a branch, results in an open wound that will
never close properly. It forces new and rapid growth from
otherwise dormant buds that creates weakly attached wood
and an unnatural growth habit.

The irony is that “topping” is often done with the intent
to control or limit the size of a tree or to “improve” the
shape. The unfortunate result is the new weak growth that
generally exceeds the original growth that had been removed
and a tree with a completely unnatural shape.

The Leesburg Tree Commission has set a goal of 40 percent
tree canopy cover. This goal is in line with communities
similar to Leesburg. With a current tree canopy cover of
approximately 27 percent, we have a good way to go. But
we can get there if the public and private sectors work
together to plant new trees and to protect the trees we
have. A good place to start is by not topping otherwise
healthy trees.

To learn more about Leesburg’s Tree Commission and access
valuable information about the importance of trees and
proper tree care go to The Town of Leesburg Web site at
Leesburgva.gov, click on Boards and Commissions and go to
the Tree Commission’s page. You will find some excellent
information about proper tree pruning on the National Arbor
Day Web site, which can be accessed through the Tree Care
Resources link near the bottom of the page.

Loudoun Government Coming to Your Home

From the Office of the County Assessor is a Data Collection Letter, saying they are coming to your home soon to conduct an assessment.

Leesburg Tree Commission

Yes Leesburg, we do have a Tree Commission. Our job is to work with the Town
Council and residents to provide information and leadership regarding the expansion
and preservation of the tree canopy for the benefit of our community. We meet once
a month on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. The Town Forester, Jay Banks, attends all
of our meetings and there is even a time set aside for public input/Q & A. We have
a very informative website located at www.leesburgva.org/trees. The Commission
plans tree related events throughout the year that provide education and instruction
on tree care, removal, planting, pruning and more. There are many benefits to trees,
especially the economical benefit provided by reducing utility costs and adding to
property values. Check out our website to see how to use trees to save and make money.
