Exciting Upcoming Events

Dear Fellow Woodlea Residents and Friends,

Greetings from Randy Hollister, fellow Woodlea Manor resident and Headmaster of Loudoun Country Day School. I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know about three great upcoming activities and programs at Loudoun Country Day School that may be of interest to you.

1. John Chen piano concert this Saturday, May 15 at 7:00. To put it directly, John is a prodigy, a truly remarkable talent. He is now a student at Julliard in NYC and has played around the world, including Russia and China. In addition, he has won several major competitions, including at Carnegie Hall. John is scheduled to perform with the National Symphony Orchestra later this fall. Tickets are $20. Please visit our website (www.lcds.org) or call Amy Warner, Director of Communications, at 703/777-3841. This event takes place on our campus in our multipurpose room in our main building. By the way, there is an article on John and his upcoming concert on page 20 of Loudoun Local Living of today’s Washington Post.

2. Carson Clark: LCDS 4th grade student Carson Clark (also a Woodlea Manor resident) will give a presentation (with some help from his dad) on nature photography and his recently published book The Adventures of Buddy the Beaver on Tuesday, May 25 at 7:00 in our multipurpose room in our main building. Despite being in 4th grade, Carson has already given talks to large audiences in various parts of the country. He has become an accomplished presenter–before reaching the age of middle school! Admission is free. Carson’s book is available for purchase that evening, and he and his dad will be doing book signings following his talk. We are very proud of Carson.

3. LCDS Summer Camps: Taking advantage of our magnificent new facilities and grounds, we are greatly expanding our summer camp offerings this summer. Please check our website for details. Advertisements about our summer camps are running in local print media and will start next week in the Washington Post.

I wanted to share this information with you. I hope to see you at any/all of these events and programs. Please feel free to share this information with friends and business associates. In addition, I would be delighted to give you a tour of our new facilities.

Best wishes,

Randy Hollister

Here is some news about our local schools…

February 8th, 2009. Here is some news about our local schools…

  1. The ten point grading scale has been accepted for next school year.  The school board will be announcing it officially at a meeting soon.  With Fairfax also making the change, this is in line with other districts in Virginia.   AP courses will be weighted at 1.0 beginning this semester.
  2. If you don’t want those phone calls/ emails at all hours about weather closings for schools, you can opt out on the LCPS website.  (you will still get messages in the event of an emergency or Principal’s notice, but you won’t get the 4:30 am alerts)
  3. In this time of fiscal restraint, it is important that residents understand their voice in the community. For our schools, school employees have accepted a freeze or reduction in their salaries to offset school needs. All residents may contact our board of supervisors regarding the proposed budget for the next school year.  In supporting the school board’s zero based budget, supervisors will keep the budget as it was this year with no increases and programs will stay intact. There are also cuts being considered at five to fifteen percent. With this much funding being removed from the budget, residents will see substantial change  in what our schools can do for the next school year.  Residents should be prepared that many of extra programs will be strongly reduced or disbanded with five to fifteen percent cuts.  To share your opinions you may attend any of the upcoming meetings.
